Double Success
Most entrepreneurs who volunteer on the side may devote an hour a week to community
service. For the last seven years, Jo Ann Hilliker has volunteered much more:
ten to fifteen hours a week while also finding time to build a successful business.
Hilliker launched Canes and Such Inc., a Web-based retailer of high-end canes,
in October 1997 after graduating FastTrac earlier that year. The business arose
from her experience using an ugly aluminum cane while suffering from osteoarthritis
in her hip. Her fruitless search for a more fashionable cane led her to set
up shop.
